My workouts had been going so well and I was getting into the best shape I had been in for a while. Then last Monday (June 24th) I started to get a stomach ache. I went to bed thinking it was just a stomach ache and had a rough sleep. The next day it wouldn’t go away so finally at night I went into the hospital with my girlfriend.
They had me on some painkillers over night expecting that my appendix was inflamed. The pain got a lot worse Tuesday and the doctors figured out my appendix had ruptured. Originally they thought I was going to have to have a pretty big surgery, but they decided to wait to see if the antibiotics would help heal it before they went in for surgery.
Luckily after a few days of a lot of pain, painkillers, and antibiotics the pain started to slowly go away and things were looking much better. They still had to monitor me every couple hours in the hospital to make sure I wouldn’t need an emergency operation, but they decided I could probably get away without having it.
I was in the hospital for 6 nights and finally got released this past Monday without having any surgeries. Although the whole process was brutal to go through, in the end I think I turned out pretty lucky in that I didn’t have any serious surgery.
Right now I’m back at home and feeling almost back to normal. The doctor basically said I could return to working out and sports when I felt 100%. I’m guessing it will be a week or two before I can slowly get back into the gym, which will mean that I’ll be away from the gym for about 3 weeks in total if all goes well.
It could be worse but not working out for 3 weeks sucks, especially after all of the gains I had in the previous month.
Some people have been asking what caused it, but it seems to be just something that can happen to anyone for no particular reason. The way the doctor explained it is that something gets stuck in your appendix and then bacteria just forms behind it and causes it to expand. When I originally had the stomach pains I was thinking if it was something I ate, did in the gym, or did while playing baseball the night before but that ended up not being the case.
I also think that with me being in pretty good shape and overall healthy it allowed my body to heal much better and faster than if I were in poor shape and ate unhealthy, etc. Just another reason to stay healthy!
In the meantime I might try and write some reviews of supplements I’ve taken recently (before my ruptured appendix). I’ve got some free time now with not being able to workout and play sports, so I will try and get some posts up. Have a good week.
